INTERREGG Cross-border Project between Italy and Slovenia

l2.jpeg

The project was born from the desire to protect the cross-border lagoon ecosystems between Italy and Slovenia, areas that are particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change.

Project duration

BioTiles is a cross-border cooperation project between Italy and Slovenia funded by the Interreg VI-A program, created with the aim of counteracting erosion, biodiversity loss, and the effects of climate change in lagoon ecosystems. Lagoons represent precious and delicate environments, fundamental for ecological balance and for the communities that revolve around them. However, they are now threatened by extreme weather events and rising sea levels. To address these challenges, BioTiles aims to develop and test innovative natural biosubstrates capable of improving the resilience of the lagoon bed and promoting ecosystem regeneration. The project includes the collection and analysis of environmental data, the creation of a shared and replicable cross-border operational protocol, and the activation of civic, educational, and institutional engagement pathways.

Mimma Dreams APS participates as the partner responsible for communication and dissemination, with the aim of making scientific content accessible, promoting environmental awareness, and strengthening the active participation of local communities, especially young people.

Main Themes

Cross-border cooperation, Innovation, Environmental protection

Expected results and impacts

Planned Activities

Through an interdisciplinary and participatory approach, BioTiles aims to generate concrete and lasting impacts on the territory. Among the main expected results:

Natural biosubstrates tested and validated, applicable on a real scale

Sedimentary erosion models and mitigation strategies

Shared operational protocol between Italian and Slovenian bodies for lagoon management

Open and interactive environmental data platform, integrated into the EMODnet network

Increased awareness and environmental activism by citizens, students, and local stakeholders

Strengthening of cross-border cooperation between scientific, public, and civic institutions

BioTiles develops along several lines of intervention:

Environmental research and experimentation: innovative biosubstrates—composed of natural fibers and microbial biofilm—are designed and tested for application in the laboratory and at pilot sites in the lagoons of Grado, Marano, and the Slovenian coast. The goal is to increase seabed stability, promote biodiversity, and reduce erosion.

Development of a cross-border operational protocol: the data collected during the experiments will be used to define an exportable model of sustainable management of lagoon areas, capable of responding to climate change and being replicated in other European contexts.

Creation of the “Lagoon Center” and Data Hub: a physical and digital center dedicated to lagoon resilience will be established, serving as a space for training, discussion, and dissemination for schools, citizens, stakeholders, and institutions. The Data Hub will be connected to the European EMODnet Biology network and will collect scientific and environmental data accessible to all.
